About the Festival

The City of Discovery invite you to re-discover Dundee at this year's Summer Festival with a mixture of free and ticketed indoor and outdoor events.

This year brings together a programme offering three music festivals, a literary festival, German and Continental markets and other cultural events to ensure that there is something for everyone.

On 5&6 June, acclaimed music industry convention and new music showcase goNorth takes over the City of Discovery. As well as showcasing over 60 emerging bands and solo artists, the event features a wealth of workshops, panels, films and events for anyone involved in music or the creative industries.

From 19-22 June the Dundee Literary Festival offers readings and workshops with many famous authors. The Festival features an audience with Dame Vivienne Westwood, one of the most influential fashion designers in the UK, a reading by creator of Inspector Rebus, Ian Rankin as well as a session on How to Get Published and a Creative Writing Workshop.

Famous for Dundee's historic links to the DC Thomson empire which includes The Beano, The Dandy and Bunty, for the first year the Festival will include a comic conference with lectures and talks from eminent cartoonists, artists and historians.

From 27-29 June Blues Fans descend on the city when Dundee Blues Bonanza welcomes over 135 acts in over 30 venues in Dundee's City Centre.   This year's Dundee Blues Bonanza will be headlined by Detroit Bluesman, Robert Penn. Detroit's world renowned man of the blues has been perfecting his craft for the last thirty years, developing a style and skill which has been compared to that of B.B. King. Another attraction will be the return of the Junior Bonanza for people under the age of 18. Workshops will be held this year at Riptide Studios, Blinshall Street and will once again be featuring 15 year old Krissy Matthews who impressed everyone so much with his band at last year's Blues Bonanza.

Friday 1 July sees the return of the ever popular Dundee Guitar Festival which, this year features amongst other Hungarian artists, The Katona Twins making their first visit to The City of Discovery. The finale of the Guitar Festival and the 2008 Dundee Summer Festival is the event Night of the Guitar which sees three different guitar styles brought together in one concert. The concert will feature Allan Neave who will play classical, formally from Clannad, Ian Melrose will play fingerstyle and Martin Taylor MBE will play jazz.
